China is holding a series of military exercises near Taiwan, apparently in anger after Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited disputed island territory.
Chinese armed forces conducts live shooting in the Taiwan Strait, a narrow disputed body of water between mainland China and Taiwan.
It is reported that the military is practicing blockades at sea and missile launches, as well as military operations on land. The Chinese military is using advanced technology in the exercise, including J-20 stealth fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles.
“In the event of a military conflict in the future, it is likely that the operational plans currently being worked out will be directly translated into combat,” Chinese military official Song Zhongping told state-run tabloid Global Times.
“This means that our battle plan has been brought to the attention of the US and Taiwan authorities, and we are confident enough to inform them of the consequences of further provocations in this way,” Song said.
Global Times further stated that the exercise “would enter the area within 12 nautical miles of the island and that the so-called median line would cease to exist”. According to the Global Times, the warships will “encircle” and “completely blockade the island, demonstrating the absolute control of mainland China over the Taiwan issue.”
The People’s Republic of China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, the relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. The Chinese military frequently sent planes to the area to inspect Taiwan’s air defense zone.
The US has no official relationship with Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, and maintainsOne China policy. which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as its legal successor.
China issued stern warnings against Pelosi’s visit in previous weeks, including threats from government officials and TV personalities. President Biden said a few weeks ago that the US military “doesn’t think it’s a good idea right now.”
“The People’s Liberation Army of China is starting joint military operations around the island of Taiwan,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lijian Zhao said. “China resolutely defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Despite the hype, Pelosi’s congressional delegation arrived and left Taiwan with little or no hindrance.
