Ace New York Mets Jacob de Grom obviously missed a step.

In his first start since last July 7, deGrom dominated Washington Nationals. DeGrom allowed one run on three hits, landing six hits and going none in five innings of work.

However, in the spirit of vintage deGrom, the Mets did not give him much support. He left the game at one thanks to a Francisco Lindor home run in the fifth and did not record a decision.

In even more deGrome fashion, the Mets’ bullpen was allowed four runs after his departure due to a 5-1 loss, just hours after Nuts traded Juan Soto in the San Diego Padres.

DeGrom was on his way to arguably the best performance in the history of the game last year. He had a 1.08 ERA and struck out 14.3 batters in nine innings, but last year he had a strained forearm and elbow inflammation that ended his season. Shortly before the start of the 2022 season, he was placed on the injured list with a right shoulder injury.

Mets fans finally got their first look at the Max Scherzer-Jacob deGrom tandem as Scherzer started Monday’s game before deGrom’s return. They have a total of five Cy Young Awards (Scherzer with three, de Thunder with two).

On Tuesday, since the start of the 2018 season, which was his first Cy Young Award campaign, deGrom owns a 1.94 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 12.0 K/9. Among pitchers who have played at least 550 pitches during this period, his ERA is the best in baseball, his WHIP is the second best, and his K/9 is the third best.
