On the right note

SO A lot has happened for Athalia Buswani since she joined TikTok three years ago. First, the 19-year-old has become a star on the social platform, with over 758,200 followers she can call her own. But apart from her success on TikTok, Atalia has also made a splash as an artist.

In fact, the singer recently marked her first musical footprint with her debut single. We are going up. And the melody, released by Universal Music Malaysia and Lion Music Group, was well received by fans and critics alike.

In just a month, the music video has racked up over 87,000 views online. And the original clip, which featured the singer teasing the tune for the first time, has over 260,000 views on TikTok.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the singer talks about her newfound musical success and the inspiration behind it. We are going up.

Congratulations on graduation We are going up! What is it like to switch from TikTok to music?

“Honestly, it seems natural. Since I was 14, I have always competed, especially in high school. I also always made covers and posted them on the internet like YouTube and stuff like that.

“So being in the music industry is not that new to me, especially when my mom is also a singer in the industry. So it’s not really new to me. But the new part is that I signed with Universal Music Malaysia, which is definitely mind blowing because I’m on the team.”

Were you nervous about the release?

“Yes. I was very nervous because I had already had a single before, but only one. Although it seemed exciting at the time, I didn’t really feel as excited as what I felt We are going up. It’s because it’s my first single that was done professionally.

“It’s under Universal Music Malaysia, which definitely feels like a peak when I’m like, ‘Oh my god, this is amazing.’ And so I was nervous about letting him out. And another fact that made me nervous was that I wrote this song with my producer Brian.

“Both the lyrics and the song are something I can relate to if I was really in the situation of writing We are going up. So, posting something you’re dealing with, it felt like I was telling a secret. So it was exciting, but it’s gone and now it’s all good.”

What We are going up everything about?

We are going up basically all about complicated friendships. It’s like a love-hate relationship. It’s one of those relationships where you’re in a good place with someone and you guys act like you’re dating and in love but at the same time you guys don’t know who you guys are. Like it’s very difficult. So, basically, that’s what the song is about.”

What inspired the melody and lyrics?

“There’s a part of the song that says, ‘I’m all blue.’ I feel out of my mind because I love you, but I don’t know how to try.” So, when it happened, at some point I thought, should I make it sad or happy?

“But I’m the kind of person where no matter how sad, touching, sincere or heartbreaking the lyrics are, I still want to do them at an upbeat tempo. Really likes to turn people on when they listen to it.

“So when we came up with the tune, I felt like we needed to do something happy. In terms of lyrics, I thought about writing about a situation that I could relate to, and that is, of course, complicated love, hateful friendship.”

Are you still in this phase?

“Well, to be honest, I sort of got over it. Yes, I finally got it right. In fact, when the song came out, the person said, “Wow, okay, you literally wrote a song about me.” It’s crazy that you’re telling your story to the world. This is crazy!'”

What are you hoping for We are going up tell listeners about you?

“I really hope We are going up help listeners get to know me more and know that I have something to say. And I would really like them to know how I perform my songs. It’s because it’s not just based on some random songs that I just sing or some random beat.

“It’s actually like something I know people will always strive for. So I want that whenever they want to understand something, they can turn to my music and relate to it.”
