Aubrey Modiba’s first goal in the 2022/23 DStv premier league is a one hit that is likely to be Goal of the Month after receiving a standing ovation from both the Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City fans on Friday night.
The Sundowns got off to a great start to their championship defense by beating The Citizens 2-0 at DHL Stadium in Mother City.
Modiba scored a superb one-hour free kick, leaving last season’s goalkeeper Hugo Marquez no chance when he fired into the roof to mark the start of the new season.
Before the fans had a chance to catch their breath, veteran Downs striker and fan favorite Temba “Mshishi” Zvane extended the away lead two minutes after Modiba’s strike.
While Zvane was at the end of a beautiful chip over Marquez, it was the painstaking work of Hashim Domingo who made a quick pass to his teammate and Zvane made sure everything looked easy as he beat his markers with ease before hitting hit.
It looks like the 33-year-old has come up with a new celebration, similar to the one he threw in the 2016/17 season, but instead of tugging at his shirt, this time he makes a sleepy gesture.
However, the score could have been different if City striker Luke Daniels had made the most of the opportunity in the 55th minute. Hanicile Mayo, who was City’s liaison on the right flank, fulfilled the striker’s cross-country dream by putting him in the path of young Daniels. However, the 18-year-old forward failed to direct a header and Ronwen Williams failed the test.
The City bench went berserk in the 80th minute when they felt they deserved a penalty. This came after Motobi Mwala, coming off the bench, handed the ball into the penalty area, but the man in the center did not notice and waved his hand, much to the annoyance of coach Eric Tinkler and the rest of his team.
In the next Sundowns meeting, they will play their first home game of the season at Loftus Versfeld against TS Galaxy on Wednesday.
