Toretsk is at the forefront of Ukraine’s war with Russia, but all around you can see cyclists pedaling through the streets, going about their daily business as if ignoring the surrounding danger.

Alexander is a former miner. “How should I drive a car?” He says. “Gasoline is expensive, I have nothing to drive. And I need to move.”

A similar picture in Kramatorsk. Those who stay do not forget about the risks, they accept them.

“I would prefer, if something happens, to die immediately,” says Vladimir. “So as not to become disabled later.”

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are estimated to have chosen to remain in threatened areas of Donetsk despite government orders to evacuate.
