China ends military and climate talks with US in response to Pelosi’s visit

China suspended all scheduled talks with the United States on key international issues in response to the visit of a US congressional delegation to Taiwan.

Beijing on Friday announced that the Chinese Communist Party is canceling all discussions about climate change, drug networks and military action.

China explained this decision Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi Congress delegation and their trip to the island of Taiwan.

The People’s Republic of China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, the relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. The Chinese military frequently sent planes to the area to inspect Taiwan’s air defense zone.

The US has no official relationship with Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, and maintains One China policy. which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as its legal successor.

The White House has repeatedly tried to calm the growing hostility surrounding Pelosi’s trip, but senior CCP officials remain irritated.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke to reporters Thursday about a recent congressional delegation to Taiwan, trying to smooth the visit.

Blinken spoke Thursday in Cambodia with Prime Minister Hun Sen. Before the reporters were escorted out of the conference room for the leaders to talk behind closed doors, Blinken paused to broach a related topic.

“I want to talk about the recent Taiwan activity because I know it’s on the minds of many,” Blinken said. “The United States remains interested in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. We oppose any unilateral effort to change the status quo, especially with the use of force.”
