The war between Russia and Ukraine is “entering a new phase,” British intelligence officials said on Saturday.

The UK Department of Defense Intelligence said in an intelligence report that Russian forces are “definitely concentrating” in Southern Ukraine and that strategic fighting will now shift from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine to the area between Mykolaiv Oblast, Kherson, and the Crimean Peninsula in the south.

“Russian war with Ukraine is about to enter a new phase, with the heaviest fighting shifting to an approximately 350 km front line stretching southwest from Zaporozhye to Kherson parallel to the Dnieper River.

“Russian forces are almost certainly concentrating in the south in anticipation of a Ukrainian counteroffensive or in preparation for a possible offensive,” the intelligence report said.

British Ministry of Defense a major movement of Russian troops, tanks and support vehicles into the southern region is also detailed.

“Long columns of Russian military trucks, tanks, towed artillery and other weapons continue to move away from the Ukrainian Donbas and head southwest. Kerch bridge to the Crimea, ”the intelligence report says.

“Battalion tactical groups (BTG) numbering from 800 to 1000 people were stationed in Crimea and will almost certainly be used to support Russian troops in the Kherson region,” the report says, noting that another BTG is likely to join these forces “in the coming days.”

After more than 160 days of fighting in a war that many experts believe would have lasted less than two weeks, Ukraine has successfully counterattacked and regained territories on its eastern front that were once occupied by Russia.

The country has also been successful in attacking critical transportation infrastructure that Russia has been using to assist troops on the front lines.

“Ukrainian forces are focusing their efforts on the bridges, munitions depots, and railroad tracks that are increasingly passing through the southern regions of Ukraine, including the strategically important railway line that links Kherson to Russian-occupied Crimea, almost certainly using a combination of blocking, damaging, degrading, negate, destroy and disrupt the effects to try to influence Russia’s ability to carry out logistical resupply,” the report says.
